Melania Trump refiles Daily Mail lawsuit and drops reference to 'once-in-a-lifetime opportunity' to profit from her brand

The first lady has refiled a lawsuit against the publishers of the Daily Mail, dropping the reference to a missed "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to profit from her brand.

Melania Trump was the subject of scrutiny when the detail of her lawsuit emerged, with some questioning if she planned to profit from her time as first lady.

The lawsuit centres on a story ran by the Daily Mail which reported allegations that Ms Trump once worked as an escort. The article was later retracted.

She is seeking damages of €141m.

The new lawsuit focuses on the emotional distress caused by the article.

"[The] false and defamatory statements about [Mrs Trump] have caused tremendous harm to [her] personal and professional reputation and prospective economic opportunities, as well as causing her significant humiliation and emotional distress," the filing reads, according to the BBC.

Initially it said that Mrs Trump had the "unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... to launch a broad-based commercial brand in multiple product categories, each of which could have garnered multi-million dollar business relationships for a multi-year term during which [she] is one of the most photographed women in the world".

Ms Trump denied, through her lawyers, that there was any plans to gain financially from her husband's term in the White House.
